Who deserves God’s grace? I know I don’t.
The things I have done, thought and said toward others? To their face, behind their back, in my head? The wrong choices I have made, the damage I’ve done to myself and to others? Both family and close friends. Most of my life spent focused selfishly on me, how I can get ahead and get what I want out of life?
Despite all I have done, I have been given the gift of grace. I never prayed or asked for it. It was given to me freely.
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God (Ephesians 2:8)
What does the Lord say when He gives us grace? “I know you have sinned, my child, but I am going to let it go. Instead of punishing you, I am going to reward you with grace. Wonderful things you do not think you deserve are going to happen in your life.”
I never take grace for granted and I try my best to remember to thank Him for everything He has done in my life. In no other relationship would I receive such favor. I feel spoiled and undeserving. Why me? What did I do to deserve such great treatment?
I believe there are many reasons God grants us grace.
To show us His essential character. He is a loving, generous, thoughtful, selfless, patient, forgiving and perfect God. He looks past our faults, weaknesses and mistakes and dives deep into our heart and sees us how He made us. When God acts in grace, He gives us a second chance to redeem ourselves and discover who we are in Christ.
To show us the nature of our relationship. The Lord rewards us for no specific reason other than we love and worship God as our True Father. We do not have to perform or act for God and then wait expectantly for a reward. All He asks is we be ourselves in Christ, do our best to be faithful, obedient and loving daughters and sons of the Almighty Lord, and let everything flow from there.
To show us He is a living God. The Lord is constantly moving and operating in our lives according to His perfect will. When we are given grace, we know it is from God and not the world. Miracles and the completely unexpected happen. There is no other way to explain it. It is not coincidence, it is not fate nor luck; no, it is God working on our behalf to show how much He truly loves us. Through grace we discover we are the apple of His eye.
To show us He is a God of mystery. The Lord is unpredictable, unfathomable, unexpected, full of surprises, and sometimes beyond reason. You never know when God is going to grant you favor and you never know why. It will come when it’s least expected, completely out of the blue. He will do things in your life which will make no sense whatsoever. At the time you will be sitting there scratching your head wondering what just happened but down the road it will make sense…or not. God is free to do what He likes, when He likes, where He likes, how He likes to whomever He likes because…He is God.
The most important lesson I have learned about grace is humility. If we remain humble, thankful and obedient God will continue to pour grace into our lives. We live to serve God and to serve others. We must always put others first and ourselves last. Act out of love and not expectation, seek His face and goodness, know our place as sons and daughters and who we truly are in Christ and in ourselves. Continually thank the Lord for everything in our lives and know it is through His grace that we are born again, saved from sin by the sacrifice of His only begotten son Jesus Christ, and understand all He has and continues to do for us. We are covered by God’s grace. It is a blessing like no other and we must always remember to look up and be truly thankful for it.
