A fairground comes to town. In the fading dusk you find yourself alone at the gates. Lights, music, laughter, fun, and excitement tickle your senses and peak your curiosity. An endless display of rides, shows, games, events, and exhibitions. You touch your wallet or purse. You imagine taking out all your cash, buying rolls and rolls of tickets, indulging your pleasures over and over again. A giant magnet seems to pull you forward. Tempting you to come inside and taste what the fairground has to offer.
You look around. Crowds stream by. People jostle to get inside. Smiles on their faces, eyes lit up in anticipation. They bump and push you forward. You recognize some faces as they hurry by.
“Hey, what are you doing? Come on.”
“Hurry up, slow poke. Before it’s too late.”
“Ya, all the best stuff will be gone. Can I save you a spot?”
Crowds fill the fairground but you stand outside the gates not knowing what to do.
Maybe I should go inside? Have a quick look around? Everyone seems so happy and excited. Am I missing out?
You inch closer toward the gates. Laughter rings in your ears. Tantalizing smells fill your nostrils. Goosebumps appear on your skin. Neon lights and explosive colors wash over your eyes.
The longer you stand outside, the more you sense something is wrong.
The most handsome man or beautiful woman you have ever seen suddenly appears at the gates.
They lean forward, give you a wonderful smile, and beckon with their finger for you to come inside. “Hey there. What’s wrong? Come enjoy the show. Here, have some tickets. On the house. Everyone else is doing it. Once won’t hurt. No harm in trying, right?”
Something inside tells you to step away. It is not what it appears. You are confused and caught in a struggle. To go inside or leave?
The beautiful woman or handsome man moves in closer and gives you a seductive wink. Up close, their mask melts and slides off their face. They are cold, intelligent, and deceptive. This place is not for you and you back off, turn and walk away. From behind you hear, “You’ll be back. I know you will. Next time.”
You stroll away from the fairground, across a wide open field, leaving the bright lights and excitement further and further behind. Thick, lush grass tickles your feet and slides between your toes. You are not sure where you are going or why. You are alone in the open field…or so you think.
A stillness settles on your spirit. A warm wind blows down from the mountainside, rushes across the grass, hugs you close and pulls you in tight. All at once you are comforted, cradled and loved. You slow, stop and close your eyes. A thrilling rush explodes inside. Overwhelmed, bursting with joy and delight as tears spring from your eyes and trickle down your cheeks. You lose control, hunch over and drop down to your knees. A voice – subtle and soft – whispers across the back of your neck.
“Be at one with me. Rest in my presence and I will reveal love, light, truth, and hope beyond your wildest dreams. Let me take over and give you a sense of peace, strength, freedom and happiness you never thought possible. Take my hand and let me lead you to a Promised Land where waters run deep, the fruit is ripe and bountiful, the air clean and pure, and the glorious sun shines gentle and warm upon your face. So far away from the world you left behind.”
Another voice calls in the night. Sweet and seductive. “Come back. It’s not too late. We’re always open. There’s still plenty of time.”
You hesitate for a moment, tempted to join the crowd. But deep down inside you sense another calling. Something much stronger that tugs strong at your heart and awakens your spirit.
You get back on your feet. Instead of turning around, you decide to move forward. He appears beside you, slips His hand into yours and you begin your walk. One small, graceful step at a time.
You share stories and secrets, and slowly get to know one another. As Father and son or Father and daughter. He wraps His strong arm around your shoulders, pulls you close, pours in His love, and your life slowly begins to change.Surrender to Him and resist worldly temptation Click To Tweet
